Herb Spotlight: Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) 🌿

Comfrey has a long history of traditional use and is often called one of the great herbs for external support. The leaves and roots contain compounds such as allantoin, which has made comfrey a favorite herb in salves, oils, and topical preparations intended to support the body’s natural healing processes.

Traditionally, herbalists have used comfrey externally for areas of occasional discomfort, bruises, strains, and to support healthy skin recovery. Because of its powerful nature, many herbalists reserve comfrey primarily for external use.

One of my favorite ways to work with comfrey is as part of a carefully crafted infused oil or salve, often paired with complementary herbs such as calendula, plantain, or St. John’s wort.

Have you ever worked with comfrey before? Do you use the leaf, the root, or both in your herbal preparations?
